Emma Raducanu Faces Rocky Road to Reach US Open Finals

US Open

August 22, 2025

Emma Raducanu doesn’t mind a classic battle against a big name at a Grand Slam event.

A few weeks ago she stood toe to toe with Aryna Sabalenka – and thrilled the evening crowd on Centre Court at Wimbledon with her fearlessness.

Emma Raducanu is growing in strength with every passing month – and we can expect more stunning performances from her at Wimbledon 2026.

But it was at the US Open that she shocked the world by winning against all odds back in 2021.

And it’s New York where she might just feel sufficiently free and confident to do something amazing once more over the next fortnight.

And here’s the thing: if Emma wants to relive her past glory at Flushing Meadows, something amazing is exactly what she will have to do!

Aryna Sabalenka would probably be waiting for Raducanu if the Londoner does well enough to reach the quarter-finals.

But as early as the third round, Emma looks set to face her recent doubles partner and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

And the brilliant Italian, Jasmine Paolini is also likely to provide a stubborn obstacle to that Sabalenka match-up at the business end.

At least Raducanu faces a qualifier in the opening round of the US Open. But even they can be dangerous.

Emma knows that better than anyone. She was a qualifier when she lived her fairytale in New York – and actually won the US Open four years ago!

Raducanu is due to be first up on Louis Armstrong on Sunday, as she looks to get into her stride for the challenges ahead.

Her compatriot Jack Draper also faces a qualifier in the first round at Flushing Meadows – but seems ready to wait until Monday to get started.

He could come up against world number one Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals if all goes well for both men.

There will be plenty of unforeseen drama before then. There always is at the majors!

Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper will give it their all at the US Open. They’ll do the same at Wimbledon 2026 – their home Slam – next summer.

And in the mean time we can’t wait to see how early shocks could change the complexion of the boisterous tournament in New York.

Nothing quite compares to the historic atmosphere at Wimbledon, though. We hope you’ll find out in ten months’ time!
