Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek Are the Big Cincinnati Winners

Carlos Alcaraz will be happier with the significance of his Cincinnati victory that the win itself.

He claimed his eighth Masters 1000 title and goes into the US Open with 54 wins under his belt so far this year. Six titles up to this point make for a personal record.

There won’t be many showdowns with Jannik Sinner which see the brilliant Italian fail to win a single game.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner will hope for a more typically spectacular clash at Wimbledon 2026. Perhaps they can even hit familiar heights at the forthcoming US Open.

But in Cincinnati the world’s best had to retire with Alcaraz leading 5-0 in the first set. The favourite simply didn’t feel well enough to continue.

Will Jannik Sinner be fully fit and ready to take another Grand Slam title in New York? We shall see soon enough. Right now Alcaraz seems to have the upper hand.

Victory for Carlitos in Cincinnati doesn’t make him the best player. But if the Spaniard performs better than Sinner at the US Open, then he looks set to take over the precious world number one ranking.

A superior display from Alcaraz at Flushing Meadows – and being placed top of the pile as a result – really will mean something big.

Jannik will be keen to provide more entertainment in the Big Apple after feeling he let the crowd down in Cincinnati.

Sinner said: ‘I tried to come and make it at least a small match – but I couldn’t handle more. I’m very, very sorry for all of you.’

Alcaraz responded: ‘As you said Jannik, this isn’t the way I want to win matches or to win a trophy.’

The women’s final provided a better contest this time around. Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek can do no wrong right now.

She came back from 0-3 to edge a thrilling first set against Jasmine Paolini. The Pole then romped home 7-5, 6-4 to claim her eleventh WTA 1000 title.

‘Thank you for forcing me to become a better player,’ Swiatek told Paolini, who may have been motivated by more personal considerations.

How good can Iga become? No one will want to play her at the US Open, that’s for sure.

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek will surely feature at the business end of Wimbledon 2026 next summer too.

Will you be there to enjoy the world’s most prestigious tournament at the All England Club, starting late next June?
