Ben Shelton Triumphs in Toronto, More British Glory in Canada too

Ben Shelton has won his first ATP Masters 1000 title with a dramatic victory at the Canadian Open.

The 22-year-old became the youngest American man to win such an important tournament since Andy Roddick took Miami in 2004.

Ben Shelton is undoubtedly one of the most charismatic stars in world tennis right now.

And crucially the hungry youngster is developing a big-match temperament to go with his enormous talent.

Shelton edged a nail-biter of a final 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to turn long-standing promise into his greatest moment so-far.

It was much tougher than Shelton’s surprisingly straightforward semi-final triumph over his compatriot Taylor Fritz.

Ben Shelton might even be able to eclipse Fritz at Wimbledon 2026 on this kind of form.

A few weeks ago Shelton reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon – and seemed capable of anything. Fritz made it all the way to the semis – where he almost took Carlos Alcaraz to a fifth set.

Could Wimbledon 2026 be the year for these impressive American men to go even further?

For now, American fans can be delighted with the way events unfolded in Toronto. US tennis is definitely on the up!

Meanwhile Wimbledon champions Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool have beaten their British rivals Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski to take their own Canadian title.

A thrilling climax saw Cash and Glasspool secure the trophy 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 13-11 to continue their winning habit.

It’s their sixth title of the year and first ATP 1000 success. And such an early glory run means they have already ensured qualification for the ATP Finals in Turin.

Cash said: ‘Qualifying for Turin was one of our goals in the off-season. To have done it so early is obviously amazing. But we have more targets before the end of the season, when we will push for that one.’

Wimbledon 2026 will provide everyone’s biggest target when the European summer comes round once more.
