Jannik Sinner brought the ice to put out the fire – and avenged his Roland Garros defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in style.
The way he turned his fortunes around and met the psychological challenge in such a short space of time was not lost on him.
‘Emotionally I had a very tough defeat in Paris. I accepted the loss and kept working. I held my nerve. Holding this trophy means a lot. I’m just living my dream.’
Sinner’s reward for relentless sporting bravery was a maiden Wimbledon title, plus lasting proof that he has finally mastered grass.
The two young tennis greats left the stage arm in arm, Sinner the deserved 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 winner.
Jannik said to Alcaraz: ‘We have an amazing relationship off the court. Keep pushing. You’re going to hold this trophy again. You have already held it twice.
‘This is so special. Seeing my parents and brother here is amazing.’
We did warn you in our preview that Alcaraz wasn’t quite the favourite that he appeared to most neutral observers. Not after the way Sinner disposed of Djokovic. Those doubts we voiced ultimately proved valid.
That famous Carlitos smile was rarely seen as his magical touch slowly deserted him.
‘It’s difficult to lose,’ Carlitos admitted painfully. ‘But it’s a great friendship off the court and a great rivalry on the court.’
Sinner began to grow in confidence once he overcame early setbacks. After a succession of losses to his rival, he sensed this was finally his moment.
Jannik Sinner has now shown Carlos Alcaraz that together they share a beautiful and genuine Grand Slam rivalry. Either man can win on the biggest occasion on any surface. It’s just the way it should be.
This is what we wanted going forward. This is the mark of truly special tennis entertainment – practically guaranteed for years to come.
British and Spanish royalty rubbed shoulders with Hollywood superstars at this, the most prestigious tennis tournament of all. Centre Court roared its approval as one.
The ice-cool Italian served like a dream and used his huge wingspan to to exert pressure deep into both corners.
With every passing game, Jannik Sinner ended the hopes of a Carlos Alcaraz Wimbledon hat-trick with an awesome and nerveless display. His country’s first ever Wimbledon singles champion. What an achievement.
Alcaraz fans might grudgingly claim Sinner shouldn’t have been there at all. Grigor Dimitrov was two sets up against Jannik when he was forced to retire.
That contest came even before the business end of the tournament. And a wry smile might be seen on the face of the popular Bulgarian somewhere in the tennis universe this evening.
But such is sport. Alcaraz had his own chance to beat Sinner fair and square when it mattered – and simply didn’t serve well enough.
The Spaniard only has himself to blame and he will know that deep down. But as Sinner said, his rival’s time will surely come again.
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz seem destined to battle it out for the biggest tennis prizes all over the world now.
And what exquisite entertainment they provide every time they play. We can only thank our lucky stars they have come along at the same time.
The final games of the first two sets had to be seen to be believed. And even then they were hard to accept as physically possible.
Sinner certainly looked stunned when Alcaraz turned desperate defence into conclusive attack with one swish of his racquet. To lose a set on a point he had completely dominated. To reduce Alcaraz to a sprawling mess one moment, and then fall behind the next. That must have been tough.
You could see Sinner’s organised mind trying to make sense of it all before they resumed play. But the Italian was clearly struggling to take it all in.
That sense of confusion and helplessness didn’t last long. To his credit, Jannik went on the attack once more – and barely relented all second set.
The game he played to level the match simply took the breath away. On nearly every point, he summoned something special.. Diagonals from the tennis gods, shot creation by a true tennis artist.
Sometimes we accuse Sinner of being too mechanical. Not in the Wimbledon 2025 final. This was the standard he maintained until the end.
Jannik Sinner played like a true champion. As with Iga Swiatek on Saturday, he overcame a lifetime of doubts on grass. And he did so in emphatic style.
So that was Wimbledon 2025! A tournament full of drama, surprises and extremes. And that’s just the way we like it!
