Amanda Anisimova Faces Iga Swiatek in Wimbledon 2025 Final

Wimbledon

July 10, 2025

Amanda Anisimova found fatal depth on a crosscourt forehand and suddenly an epic contest was over.

She was through to the Wimbledon 2025 women’s final, where she will play Iga Swiatek.

Amanda Anisimova has become the first American to reach the showpiece at the All England Club since the days when Serena Williams used to make Centre Court her own.

For a while it seemed as though Anisimova simply couldn’t cope with the idea of victory, or following in such huge footsteps as Serena’s.

Not when she had turned her back on tennis only two years earlier, her mind in a whirl and her heart no longer in it.

Amanda Anisimova squandered one match point after another. You could sense the panic rising within her.

And Aryna Sabalenka was already furious with her opponent, who had failed to observe the usual niceties when luck was on her side.

Players are supposed to apologise for their own good fortune when their shot hits the net cord and dribbles over.

When Anisimova’s luck brought her to within one game of victory, she simply clenched her fist and looked to the skies.

‘You don’t even want to say sorry?’ Sabalenka could be seen asking as they went to their seats before changing ends.

Perhaps this was all part of Anisimova’s mind games, since everyone knows that Sabalenka’s emotions can often get the better of her.

Aryna Sabalenka had been top seed and favourite. But the underdog’s backhand had worked like a dream all match.

With victory in sight, however, everything about Anisimova looked shaky. Sabalenka looked super-motivated to stay in the match.

Even as she served at 0-40 in the final game, she wouldn’t give in – and saved two more match points.

Amanda Anisimova looked close to tears. And then she conjured the wounding winner that ended it all – and earned her a place against former world number one Swiatek in Saturday’s final.

As all America cheered, Anisimova couldn’t believe she had won such a massive contest 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The battle was so much harder than the score line suggested.

She explained: ‘It doesn’t feel real right now, honestly. Aryna is such a competitor.

‘To come out top today and be in the Wimbledon final is incredibly special. I know she is number one. But a lot of people were cheering for me. I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone.’

What a journey back to the big time she has enjoyed over the last year or two. She added: ‘To be honest, if you’d told me I’d be in the Wimbledon final I would not have believed you.

‘To be in the final is just indescribable, honestly. I’m sure it’s going to be a battle.’

The way Iga Swiatek dismissed Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-0 suggests she will be a truly formidable competitor.

The Pole’s swiping, biting forehand against the American’s powerful, unerring backhand.

Swiatek’s superior experience makes her the favourite. But you just never know in women’s tennis. It’s so gloriously unpredictable these days. And they have never played before.

We’re pretty sure the final is going to be incredibly special, though – just as Anisiomova says.
