Carlos Alcaraz Returns from the Dead to Claim French Crown
Roland Garros
June 8, 2025
Carlos Alcaraz is the beast who will never allow himself to be tamed by Jannik Sinner.
It took an historic five hours and thirty minutes to underline the point.
Wimbledon 2025 may well provide the next instalment of this incredible rivalry. We just can’t wait for a repeat of Paris.
The Spaniard faced three championship points at 3-5 and 0-40 in the impossibly dramatic fourth set. It had to be over. But it wasn’t. This was just the beginning.
Alcaraz saved every single one, to the astonishment of the tennis world. The first man to do so in a Roland Garros final. And the drama didn’t stop until dinner time.
Sinner also never ceases to amaze us. His ability to play his part in the longest French Open final – so soon after his return to action from a three-month ban – is truly extraordinary.
He overcomes nearly everything – even more than five hours of pain. But ultimately he couldn’t overcome the horror of squandering three match points.
Carlos Alcaraz will now move on to defend his title at Wimbledon 2025. Jannik will seek revenge.
Sinner is the best player in the world. But he has yet to prove himself on grass. Alcaraz might return to haunt him once more.
Carlitos has taken the last two Wimbledon titles – and will be hungry for a hat-trick after glory n Paris.
Something had to give at Roland Garros. Neither player had lost a Grand Slam final before. Carlitos maintained his unbeaten record 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-2)
Sinner was resolute and ruthless in the first half of the match. Even second serves went fizzing over the net with scarcely returnable force.
For those first two sets, the Spaniard was under too much pressure to conjure the drop shots that might have undone Jannik.
But Carlitos did break back when Sinner served for the set. It was all down to the breaker – and not for the last time.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner might create more tie-break drama at Wimbledon 2025. But the first one in the French Open final was over relatively quickly in Sinner’s favour.
Carlitos had never come back from two sets down at a Grand Slam. Sinner hadn’t dropped a set in a major since the fourth round in Melbourne.
Could Alcaraz summon something extraordinary? Everyone had longed for a five-set classic. The ever-present Dustin Hoffman – the marathon man – waited for a another marathon. He got his wish.
The third set brought the crowd to life and gave Spanish fans hope. Alcaraz produced flashes of his magical best and came out on top. The crowd roared their support.
They did so again when he saved those three consecutive match points in the fourth – defiant and brilliant. What happened from that point on was historic and dramatic. Tennis is the gift that keeps on giving.
Only in the ten-point deciding breaker did Sinner finally run out of steam.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are likely to produce another epic on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2025.
