Novak Djokovic Defies Time to Create Showdown with Sinner

Uncategorized

June 5, 2025

Novak Djokovic seemed to forget he had recently celebrated his 38th birthday.

Somehow in the fourth set of an epic against Sascha Zverev, Novak was hitting the ball harder and moving better than his far younger opponent.

But above all, it was the court craft of the sorcerer which brought about this hugely impressive and hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory.

The Serb conjured 35 drop shots of exquisite weight and dying trajectory, leaving Zverev unable to make his comparative youth pay.

The moment of the match was an extraordinary 41-shot rally at 4-2 in the fourth, when Zverev tried so desperately and ultimately failed to get back into the contest.

Once more, it was a Novak drop shot that set Zverev up for summary dismissal. Variation is always the lethal key when a slugfest doesn’t break the deadlock.

Djokovic explained: ‘My way of playing is based on running. But at my age it’s not easy to run so much. I tried to impose my rhythm with one or two drop shots.’

That was an understatement. And the Serb’s reward will be a blockbuster showdown with Jannik Sinner on Friday. The Italian will be the strong favourite. But you can never count Novak out.

Novak Djokovic is likely to go just as deep at Wimbledon 2025 on this evidence.

He is hunting for a 25th Grand Slam triumph – the one that will take him clear of Margaret Court in the history books.

It could come at Roland Garros. But Wimbledon offers the most likely opportunity, since Sinner has looked less than fully assured on grass so far.

The same can’t be said of Jannik on clay, where he made short work of beating the talented Alexander Bublik 6-1, 7-5, 6-0 in their quarter-final.

Over in London, if Carlos Alcaraz somehow falls by the wayside while defending his Wimbledon title, we now know that Djokovic is still capable of stepping up.

Novak Djokovic and his form at Roland Garros suggests there could be an historic dimension to Wimbledon 2025 if all the stars align.
