Coco Gauff Joins the American Charge into RG Round Four
Roland Garros
May 31, 2025
Coco Gauff has a vulnerability that most of us find extremely endearing.
That’s why she will feel the love once more at Wimbledon 2025.
Even when it looks as though she is making short work of a match, it can suddenly all go horribly wrong.
So it seemed against Marie Bouzkova in round three at Roland Garros. The first set looked totally one-sided. But that didn’t last.
Coco was broken early in the second set and couldn’t get back on terms, no matter how hard she tried. It looked as though we were moving into a decider, with the momentum against the American.
Finally Gauff managed to break back just in time. She came from 3-5 down to force a breaker and seize the initiative. Suddenly the killer instinct was back.
Coco powered into the last sixteen looking suitably relieved with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win. It was almost as if nothing untoward had happened.
She’ll meet Ekaterina Alexandrova next in her campaign to be competing next weekend for another Grand Slam title. But Gauff might have to turn it on all match to ensure further progress.
Coco Gauff will surely go deep into the second week at Wimbledon 2025 too. Centre Court loves her. To see her win Wimbledon would be amazing.
And we doubt she will be alone with those ambitions, judging by the super showing of American women in Paris so far.
We knew one American would go through to the fourth round even before a match started. Madison Keys took on Sofia Kenin – and they shared the first two sets.
But the most recent winner of a major, Madison Keys completed her comeback to win through 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 against her veteran compatriot.
Hailey Baptise also reached the fourth round, by defeating Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. The first-set breaker was key. After edging that, Baptiste romped to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over the Spaniard.
Jessica Pegula looked in considerable trouble early on against the 2023 Wimbledon champion, Marketa Vondrousova.
But once more the American woman passed the character test when it mattered to storm through impressively with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win against the Czech.
Pegula now takes on French sensation Lois Boisson. Jessica will be playing the crowd as well as the home favourite in that one.
Coco Gauff won’t be the only American representative in the second week at Wimbledon 2025, we sense.
It’s a great time to follow American tennis and watch the stars progress at the most iconic tournament of them all – Wimbledon.
