Jannik Sinner Is Back and Close to Perfection at Italian Open

Jannik Sinner summoned tennis from the gods to make a recent title-winner look ordinary.

Casper Ruud thought the 6-0, 6-1 display from Sinner was so stunning that he had to laugh at his own helplessness.

Ruud recently beat Britain’s Jack Draper to win Madrid. But the brilliant Norwegian was brushed aside as though he hardly knew how to play the game.

The stratospheric quality of Sinner’s performance has got the tennis world talking.

Jannik Sinner will attract plenty more attention when he arrives at the All England Club to play for the Wimbledon 2025 title.

For now he has exploded back onto the scene with a level which left his victim dumbfounded.

Ruud drooled: ‘It was as near to perfect as I have witnessed as a player. You just have to give it to him.

‘Maybe I made a couple of unforced errors in the first four games. Everything else came out of his racquet at a hundred miles an hour plus.

‘Every single shot from the forehand and backhand. Even on my shots that I felt were pretty heavy at times, he just came back firing. It’s incredibly impressive.

‘It doesn’t feel so bad, honestly. It was more fun than anything, even though I only won a game. You just look at the guy and realise this is next-level stuff.

‘Of course I wish it was a closer match. But whenever I hit a good shot he hit an even better one back.’

A cautious Sinner said: ‘I’ve raised my game day by day and I’m very happy about that. Let’s see what is coming in the semis. Everything can change in a day.’

American hot-shot Tommy Paul will be waiting to try to cause an upset this evening in the semi-finals. Once more he will have to put his off-court problems behind him.

Tommy explained: ‘I’ve had my truck repossessed after I missed a couple of payments – and I’m grinding to get it back.

‘Off court it has been a little bit stressful but on court it has been a great week so far. I’ve been getting better with every match.’

Jannik Sinner against Tommy Paul at Wimbledon 2025 could be harder to predict because grass is a great leveller.

In Rome, you would expect Sinner’s remarkable comeback to continue in style. And every thrilling match whets the appetite for the English summer action.
