Coco Gauff Storms Back for Amazing Warrior Win in Madrid

April 25, 2025
Coco Gauff is never short of fighting spirit and pure tennis passion.
And recent events in Madrid have reminded us just what Coco might be capable of this summer – if only she can fix that unreliable serve of hers.
Coco Gauff is perfectly capable of winning Wimbledon 2025, assuming all the components of her game come together in time.
But there were early moments at the tournament in Spain this week when her hopes of progressing on clay looked completely hopeless.
Gauff’s glaring imperfections have created a fascinating situation. Her technical crisis is the talk of the tennis world.
The serve is a basic part of any player’s game. Coco is a dedicated professional. What could possibly go wrong?
But the mind can sometimes be an unpredictable tool for athletes – despite all the work they might do with sports psychologists.
Iga Swiatek’s repeated defeats to Jelena Ostapenko illustrate that point all too vividly.
Gauff is hugely popular – and fans are willing her to sort out her serving issues once and for all.
Madrid has reminded us the struggle is ongoing. Coco just couldn’t get it right in the first set against Dayana Yastremska.
She claimed just five points on serve on her way to suffering a humiliating bagel. Success rates slumped to a pitiful 25 per cent on second serve and only 29 per cent on her first.
That’s when Gauff summoned the inner warrior. ‘I had to fight hard,’ she admitted. ‘Dayana was playing some great tennis in the first set. I did well to hang in there and get the win.’
The recovery of her serving ability certainly helped. But the 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory was hardly glorious.
It did at least keep Coco’s Madrid chances alive, though. And she has the opportunity to put her service woes behind her when she takes on her compatriot Ann Li in the round of 32 this weekend.
Coco Gauff will be desperately keen to fire on all cylinders when she takes to the grass on the iconic Centre Court at Wimbledon 2025 this summer.
She has plenty of time to put things right. And if her game comes together, then she can even win her first Wimbledon singles title.
The world will be watching.
