Novak Djokovic suspected he wouldn’t last long in Monte Carlo after his huge efforts in Miami.
But the nature of his defeat against unseeded Alejandro Tabilo left the world’s greatest ever player feeling depressed.
Djokovic can still raise his game for the big tournaments. But it seems he is no longer enjoying life on the circuit week in, week out.
Novak Djokovic will be super motivated and come back with a bang at Wimbledon 2025.
But you have to wonder whether we will see him compete for the singles title at the All England Club beyond this summer.
It would mean Novak doing a further year on the ATP Tour – with more lows than highs on the cards.
And to listen to Djokovic after the Chilean’s 6-3, 6-4 victory is to recognise his days at the top are numbered.
Novak made 29 unforced errors and said: ‘I expected myself at least to put in a decent performance. Not like this. It was horrible.
‘I did not have high expectations. I knew he was a tough opponent and I was probably going to play pretty bad. But not this bad. I didn’t expect it.
‘It was a horrible feeling to play this way. I’m just sorry for all the people that have to witness this.’
A joyful Tabilo had beaten Djokovic in Rome last year and said: ‘I remembered what I did well last time and thankfully I served well today. That helped me a lot. It was an unreal match.’
And Carlos Alcaraz also came close to a shock early exit when he took on Argentina’s Franciso Cerundolo.
Somehow the reigning Wimbledon fought back emphatically to progress by a convincing 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.
Carlitos commented: ‘I didn’t start well. I made a lot of mistakes and I let him play inside the court, dominating points. I knew I had to play more aggressively.’
Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have been recent finalists at the All England Club – and could do battle once more on historic Centre Court at Wimbledon 2025.
But if you want to see the greatest of all time play at Wimbledon, this could be your last opportunity. Don’t miss Djokovic at the home of tennis.
