Jakub Mensik Downs Novak Djokovic to Win First ATP Tour Title

March 31, 2025

Jakub Mensik watched one last token of defiance from Novak Djokovic drift wide.

The greatest player the world has ever seen had run out of answers in humid Miami. Outgunned by a new rival, who has been around for just nineteen years and 210 days.

Young Mensik fell to the floor in the moment of realisation. A warm embrace from his hero at the net surely meant as much as the trophy.

Dry ice soon billowed behind the new champion. A fitting symbol for the Czech teenager’s extraordinary temperament.

‘First of many,’ wrote Mensik on one of the television cameras in the huge Hard Rock stadium.

And this maiden ATP title in Miami is indeed surely just the opener in a tennis lifetime of top-level triumphs.

Jakub Mensik and his booming serve look capable of taking Wimbledon 2025 by storm as well.

This 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4) victory was crafted in consistency and unshakeable self-belief in his all-round game.

And that’s exactly what was required against a revitalised Djokovic, who was determined to fulfil what he saw as his destiny – to claim his 100th ATP title.

Will that target ever be achieved now? We will see. Never write off the brilliant Novak. But time is running out.

For Jakub Mensik, the magical ride is only just beginning. But he knew the enormity of what he had done.

Jakub explained: ‘This is the biggest day of my life. The feelings will come later. There’s no harder task than to beat Novak in the finals. But this is my time and I stayed focused. It’s incredible.’

Djokovic was typically generous in defeat. ‘This is Jakub’s moment. First of many. In the tough moments you delivered the goods. Unbelievable serving. You have a great future.’

This performance was surely the best Novak Djokovic had to offer at the age of nearly 38. And he acknowledged how happy he had been in Miami.

He said: ‘In recent times I’ve been struggling to find the level of tennis and enjoyment. But I enjoyed this tournament more than I have enjoyed any in the last couple of years.’

A respectful Mensik replied: ‘You’re the reason why I’m here. I started to play tennis because of you.’

Djokovic did offer one glimmer of hope to Jakub’s future opponents. By drawing the youngster into the net, he had often gained the upper hand. If only he had done it more.

Jakub Mensik will find the grassy lawns of Wimbledon 2025 a very different challenge. But he will surely go far.

Will you be there to see Novak Djokovic and Jakub Mensik go for glory at Wimbledon 2025?
