Carlos Alcaraz is looking ominously confident after he subdued a resurgent Denis Shapovalov with surprising ease.
And now he faces Grigor Dimitrov, who edged an absolute classic against veteran entertainer Gael Monfils.
Meanwhile Jack Draper plays American favourite Taylor Fritz in what promises to be another fantastic match-up in the round of sixteen.
Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper are going to be massive attractions at Wimbledon 2025 too.
But some of the legendary stars are still around – and Monfils never ceases to amaze at the age of thirty-eight. The unpredictable Frenchman came within two points of glory against Grigor in the unforgiving desert.
But the free-flowing Bulgarian held his nerve to take the marathon thriller 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-2).
At one stage Dimitrov emerged victorious from a 34-point rally as the crowd gasped at the sheer drama of it all.
Meanwhile Alcaraz could have allowed a similar slugfest to develop against the talented Shapovalov. But the young Spaniard was too ruthless to welcome any sustained assault on his energy reserves.
The reigning Wimbledon champion was dominant from the start – and breezed into the last sixteen of this prestigious tournament 6-2, 6-4. In truth, we had expected the fight to be closer, given the Canadian’s recent fine form.
Carlos Alcaraz could well be back to his very best for Wimbledon 2025, where he will seek a hat-trick of victories.
But the Americans will be staking a big claim in London too – and they are flying at Indian Wells.
Taylor Fritz may have faltered early against Alejandro Tabilo – but he looked increasingly convincing as he eased through 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Draper knows he will have a big fight on his hands. But he has more faith in the ability of his body to withstand the rigours of lengthy tournaments these days. He too is hungry to go deep in the desert – and there should be fireworks.
Fritz isn’t the only focus of attention for American tennis. Ben Shelton, Madison Keys and Coco Gauff are all still in the fight and capable of anything.
