Novak Djokovic has suffered another early exit at a significant tournament. And now people are beginning to wonder how long the proud Serb will soldier on.
Botic van de Zandschulp was Novak’s latest unlikely conqueror. The way the Dutchman ultimately breezed through 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 made this an even more notable upset.
And to hear Djokovic talking afterwards, you sensed that the end of an illustrious career may now be in sight.

Novak said this after his defeat at Indian Wells: ‘Things are obviously different for me the last couple of years. I’ve been struggling to play on the desired level.
‘Every now and then, I have a couple of good tournaments. But mostly it’s a challenge. It’s a struggle for me.’
Novak Djokovic may calculate that Wimbledon 2025 can still be one of those ‘very good tournaments’ for him.
The funny thing is, anything can happen at Wimbledon 2025 if Novak hits form on that familiar grass, where he feels so at home.
If reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz falters for some reason, Djokovic could yet be there to swoop for an historic 25th Grand Slam title.
But for now, he is coming to terms with losing his consistency – and the realisation that it will probably never return.
Novak reflected: ‘I guess nothing can prepare you for that moment, in a sense. You have to experience it and try to deal with it in the best possible way.’
But for Jack Draper there is only excitement about the future. The super young Brit swept aside promising Brazilian Joao Fonseca 6-4, 6-0 at Indian Wells.
