Joao Fonseca Wins Through to Face Jack Draper at Indian Wells

Indian Wells

March 7, 2025

Joao Fonseca has ensured that one young sensation plays another at Indian Wells.

The thrilling Brazilian edged plucky Brit Jacob Fearnley 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 – even though he was 1-3 down in the decider.

When Fonseca starts to fire on all cylinders, however, he is truly a sight to behold – as Fearnley discovered.

There’s a reason why the tennis world believes the eighteen-year-old is one of the most exciting newcomers for years.

Joao Fonseca could be a scintillating addition to the dramatic twists and turns of Wimbledon 2025 too.

After his win in the desert, Joao enthused: ‘It’s a pleasure being here on centre court at Indian Wells. It’s a dream.

‘People call it the fifth Grand Slam and I can understand why. It’s literally a paradise. I am so grateful.

‘Today was pretty difficult. It was very windy and I got through and I’m so happy.’

But now Jack Draper is waiting at the end of that rollercoaster ride. And the stunning Englishman is also in great form.

Fonseca can’t wait. He explained: ‘When you’re in this kind of tournament, you’re going to get huge opponents. So I’m ready for it.’

Joao Fonseca against Jack Draper is just the sort of contest that will have Centre Court spectators on the edge of their seats at Wimbledon 2025 as well.

And we can’t wait to welcome superstar Emma Raducanu to her home Grand Slam this British summer too.

But sadly Emma fell at the first hurdle in Indian Wells. And perhaps that was to be expected after her recent stalker scare.

Raducanu lost 3-6, 2-6 to Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima. But she knows where she can become stronger before the midsummer action.

‘I think I’ll need to improve starting the point. I think that’s a big part of tennis and I can do better,’ she admitted.

Meanwhile Nick Kyrgios will want to heal in good time for Wimbledon 2025. He had to retire in tears while he trailed 6-7 (7-9), 0-3 to Dutch journeyman Botic van de Zandschulp.

Kyrgios had begun to feel a sharp pain in his wrist – and the controversial Australian broke down in tears of frustration.

Joao Fonseca, Emma Raducanu and Nick Kygios should all be hitting peak form in time for Wimbledon 2025, though.
