Novak Djokovic Works a Melbourne Miracle against Alcaraz
Australian Open
January 21, 2025
Novak Djokovic continues to amaze us all. He hugged Andy Murray at the end of something almost unbelievable.
The greatest of all time still has a superhuman touch – and a fiendish ability to turn the tables.
Most of us thought he had to win the first set to stand a chance against Carlos Alcaraz in their quarter-final. Most of us were wrong.
Against the odds, Novak Djokovic is through to the Aussie Open semis after overwhelming Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. Now he will take on Sascha Zverev.
Novak Djokovic still looks good enough to take on Carlos Alcaraz in yet another Centre Court classic at Wimbledon 2025.
This time the result could even be different in London, based on the psychological victories Novak has scored at the Olympics and now in Australia.
The rivalry is exquisite and the spectacle is unique. The pair managed a mesmerising 33-shot rally towards the end of their latest extravaganza. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy this drama while we still can?
The sheer theatre of Djokovic strutting around Rod Laver Arena, milking the applause and challenging his enemies to taunt him further!
Whatever anyone thinks about Novak, he is a consummate warrior and winner. And many of us didn’t even think he would get this far at the Australian Open.
How the Serb loves proving people wrong. How he enjoys being written off at the age of 37.
And that wasn’t hard to do after the first set. Novak had squandered an early two-game lead – and seemingly found his body wanting as Alcaraz stormed back.
There were winces of pain and a medical time out for Djokovic after Carlos sealed the opener.
‘I did it with one-and-a-half legs,’ he admitted later. ‘One of the most epic matches I have played on any court.’
We weren’t even all that optimistic for Novak when he took the first three games of the second set. The Spaniard ate away at that lead fairly casually.
But then the Djokovic pressure began to tell on the younger man. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the smile was wiped off the face of the normally happy Spaniard.
He began to remonstrate with his team. They didn’t have a solution either. Carlitos and his camp were losing the psychological game.
In contrast, Andy Murray looked as calm as you like while he observed the turnaround and saw his smart thinking turn into something remarkable. A little sigh of relief was as much of a release of tension as we saw from the Scot.
There was a more intense exchange as Novak tried to protect his lead with the finishing line in sight. But that ended well. As did the match.
Novak Djokovic and Sir Andy Murray look like a good combination. We expect to see their partnership continue at Wimbledon 2025.
Will you be there with your own partner? There has never been a better time to come to Wimbledon. Even the great Djokovic can’t last forever. Can he?
