Novak Djokovic Plays Carlos Alcaraz in Wimbledon Rematch

Australian Open

January 19, 2025

Novak Djokovic against Carlos Alcaraz conjures wonderful memories of Wimbledon finals – and makes us long for Centre Court and the European summer.

But for now their rivalry is renewed on the other side of the world at the Australian Open quarter-final stage.

On paper it should be the reigning Wimbledon champion who emerges victorious on the hard courts of Melbourne. Alcaraz is seeded number three, whereas Djokovic is only seventh favourite.

But we shouldn’t forget that Novak has won the Australian Open no fewer than ten times. Carlos Alcaraz is looking for his first Melbourne title to complete his Career Slam.

Djokovic won their most recent clash at the Paris Olympics in the gold medal game – avenging those defeats at Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic also has Andy Murray in his camp these days – a partnership that could last until Wimbledon 2025.

The 37-year-old played well to see off Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) at the weekend – with Murray providing added wisdom and support..

Alcaraz only needed two strong sets to see off the injured Jack Draper 7-5, 6-1. But in truth Carlitos didn’t play all that well.

Draper had two break points at 2-2 in the first. He was 0-30 up on the Alcaraz serve at 5-5 before the Englishman succumbed to a muscular strain.

For all that, the Spaniard should still win this blockbuster contest on Tuesday. Particularly if he can get off to a flying start.

Novak Djokovic and Sir Andy Murray will both realise the importance of the veteran drawing first blood.

Murray will surely be telling his charge he needs to get this done in three or four sets – or else not at all.

A five-setter would be far more likely to go the way of the younger man, who is in his physical prime.

Whatever happens, this is going to be a fascinating contest. Will Alcaraz avenge his heart-breaking Olympic defeat?

We’ll soon find out. And we’re counting down the days to similar epics in London.

Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz will doubtless thrill us all over again at Wimbledon 2025.
