Emma Raducanu Sizzles When It Matters at Australian Open

Australian Open

January 14, 2025

Emma Raducanu produced a stunning psychological comeback to seal victory against a seeded player at the Australian Open.

And now we’re faced with the exciting possibility that she could gain momentum in Melbourne.

Emma Raducanu is already showing style and determination. We’d love to see more of the same from her later this year at Wimbledon 2025.

Her movement is better than before. And she finds an extra competitive gear in what seems to be her darkest hour.

Ekaterina Alexandrova is a tough cookie. She beat the former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina on tour last year. Alexandrova has also been a top twenty player relatively recently.

Perhaps that’s why Raducanu tightened and lost her ruthlessness when she saw the finishing line in sight.

Serving for the match against this year’s 26th seed, Emma’s hunger visibly turned to fear as she lost the initiative.

Pretty soon the Brit was forced to save a set point. We braced ourselves for a third and deciding chapter. And an underlying problem had already emerged to confound her.

Raducanu served no fewer than fifteen double faults in total. Indeed she later admitted her serve had a mind of its own.

We wouldn’t have been all that surprised if Emma had ultimately succumbed to her troubles and slipped to defeat.

Instead we were treated to some jaw-dropping brilliance from the London girl when it really mattered. An ace, a sizzling forehand pass, crushing winners left right and centre.

Suddenly Raducanu had raced to a 6-0 lead in what proved to be the deciding tie-break. The shell-shocked Russian wasn’t coming back from that deficit.

Against the odds, Emma sealed a superb 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2) victory – and now faces the equally beatable Amanda Anisimova in round two.

Emma Raducanu can let her tennis do the talking in Melbourne and at Wimbledon 2025 – if only she can correct that second serve.

She certainly wasn’t always misfiring on the first. Emma conjured nine sparkling aces to her opponent’s one. That made her serving issues all the more baffling.

She admitted: ‘I think my serve had a mind of its own. But I have great returns too – and it was good to be able to rely on other parts of my game.

‘I’m just very proud that I didn’t let it affect me too much and let the match run away from me.’

Of Anisimova she added: ‘She’s had some amazing results. I’m looking forward to going out there and testing my game and seeing where I’m at.’

Centre Court is looking forward to seeing Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon 2025 too! It should be a memorable occasion.
