Coco Gauff reduced Iga Swiatek to tears with a stunning performance at the United Cup.
And many are starting to believe the tide is turning when it comes to that particular rivalry.
There was a time when Gauff couldn’t beat the Pole, however hard she tried. Coco lost eleven of their first twelve showdowns – and must have wondered whether she could ever be the best.
But the American has prevailed on the last two occasions. Gauff was dominant at the WTA Finals. And she has just followed up that success with an impressive 6-4, 6-4 win in Sydney.
Hard-hitting and free-flowing, Coco celebrated in style as an emotional Swiatek looked on helplessly.
Coco Gauff might be celebrating again at Wimbledon 2025 if she continues to show this kind of beautiful aggression.
She explained her form like this: ‘I think it’s just down to confidence. I have the belief that I’m one of the best players in the world.
‘When I play good tennis it’s hard to beat me. Today I played great tennis and I’m happy to get a point for Team USA.”
That early victory put her country ahead against Poland in a keenly contested final. Taylor Fritz was later tasked with trying to seal the deal against Hubert Hurkacz.
But whatever was destined to unfold Down Under, Gauff had laid down a marker for the New Year.
Meanwhile Aryna Sabalenka was kissing another trophy as she took the Brisbane International 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 against Polina Kudermetova.
Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka could be the two favourites for Wimbledon 2025. What a showdown that would make on the historic Centre Court!
