Andy Murray will coach Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open – and it will be fascinating to see how long the Brit lasts in his new role.
Such was the shock value of this Djokovic appointment that Italy’s latest Davis Cup triumph almost seemed incidental.
Andy Murray could be back on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2025 – this time in Novak’s box.
Here at WDH we have been predicting for some time that Murray would retire and become a coach this year.
But we thought his first charge would be his controversial Australian friend, Nick Kyrgios.
No one saw Novak Djokovic as the first stop in Australia. Particularly since Murray lost four times to the Serb in Aussie Open finals – and once to Roger Federer for good measure.
But Andy’s old coach Jamie Delgado explained the logic behind the move that might yet prove historic, with Djokovic only one Grand Slam away from going clear of Margaret Court’s 24 majors.
Delgado said: ‘You have to remember that Andy has played against Novak many times. He will know and express to Novak what makes him so difficult to play against.
‘Also Andy has played against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz himself. To get that final few per cent to make a difference from a strategy point of view, you would be hard-pushed to find someone better than Andy.’
Andy Murray needs to pass the Djokovic audition for six months – and then he could become a key figure at Wimbledon 2025 in the most unexpected way.
Meanwhile we fully expect Sinner to make his biggest impact yet at Wimbledon 2025. All is perfectly poised for the English summer.
Jannik’s arch-rival Alcaraz has stolen all the glory in the last two years – claiming the Wimbledon singles title twice.
But it seems to be Sinner who can’t stop winning now. His latest move has been to lead Italy to Davis Cup glory – mirroring the Italian women’s triumph in the Billie Jean King Cup.
Matteo Berrettini beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-2 to set the ball rolling in the Malaga final against the Netherlands.
Then Sinner sparked ecstatic celebrations by defeating Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. That meant Italy had retained the Davis Cup in the same year Sinner won his first two Grand Slam titles.
Wimbledon 2025 could be all about a first, classic Centre Court final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. But it might equally be about Novak Djokovic and Sir Andy Murray!
