A delighted Fritz admitted: ‘It was tough in the second and third sets. Things can change so quickly. I felt like I played the perfect first set – but I was in some tough spots in the third.
“I just told myself at the end that I just had to fight and be solid. A big thing is how I trust my game and my level. I don’t feel nearly as uncomfortable in these situations any more. I’m really confident in my game.
‘The last couple of times I’ve played Zverev, I have felt really good in the rallies. I didn’t want to change my game too much.
‘In the final I want to play exactly the way I played in the first set. But it’s going to be a different match-up.’
That Fritz forehand is a thing of beauty. His serve rarely fails. His variation and movement is improving all the time.
