Alexander Zverev silenced the Parisian crowd with a crushing service exhibition in Paris.
Sleeveless and ruthless, the German offered Ugo Humbert precious few opportunities to make his mark in front of a stunned Parisian crowd.
In fact the Frenchman managed to win just one point on Zverev’s serve in the entire first set. Such was the newly-installed world number two’s dominance inside Bercy’s Palais Omnisports.
Humbert was able to claim just five points on return in the entire match, as he fought hard just to make the score line respectable.
As Zverev cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory, you wondered how this talented individual had failed to win a major so far in a career characterised by underachievement at the death.
Alexander Zverev will be one of a handful of young stars truly capable of winning Wimbledon 2025.
He must learn to believe in himself at the business end of Grand Slams – just as he does when it comes to ATP Masters 1000 events.
This was Sascha’s seventh career triumph at this tournament level. And the outcome was really never in doubt once he neutralised the crowd, which had come to crown his opponent.
Zverev explained: ‘Once the crowd gets involved, it’s going to be difficult. I had to take that away early – and I did. I’m happy about that.
‘I knew I had to play like this to win today because Ugo is an incredible player and he plays even better in Paris.’
Not this time. And Zverev must now be one of the favourites for the ATP Finals in Turin this month.
Then we can start to look forward to next year. And we all know the most prestigious tournament of them all. It isn’t so very far away.
Alexander Zverev must know there has never been a better time to break through that psychological barrier and win Wimbledon 2025.
He will have turned 28 by the time the tennis world flocks to the All England Club. And his game is as suited to grass as it is to any other surface.
Will you be there at Wimbledon 2025 to see Zverev do battle with the likes of reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz and world’s best Jannik Sinner?
