Jannik Sinner Takes Down Novak Djokovic In Shanghai Final

Locker Room

October 13, 2024

Jannik Sinner produced a pulsating display to remind everyone why he is now the best in the business.

Carlos Alcaraz – the only other modern-day man who could lay claim to such a description – watched from the Shanghai stands along with the legendary Roger Federer.

The man who is the best there has ever been according to the record books was out on court. The amazing Novak Djokovic is still reaching finals at a time when all his old rivals have retired.

But the new kid on the block is just too good. Sinner even has Novak’s ice-cool temperament in the biggest moments. That’s why he edged the first-set breaker before overwhelming the battered veteran by a convincing 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.

Jannik Sinner versus Carlos Alcaraz is the most competitive show in the tennis universe these days. Will that be the Wimbledon 2025 final?

For now Jannik sealed his seventh title of the year with a wide-angled ace. It emphatically confirmed his status as year-end number one.

There was no 100th title for Novak on this occasion – only a third Masters 1000 title of the year for the Italian.

The tennis world wants Djokovic to achieve that extraordinary milestone before time catches up on him forever. And once more we saluted his courage in pursuit of more glory.

Sinner said: ‘He was serving great in the first set and I couldn’t get past him. He doesn’t have any weaknesses. You just have to keep believing and take any chances he gives you – which aren’t so many.’

But Novak, the watching Federer and Alcaraz could only really marvel at the ruthlessness of a young man already hitting his physical and psychological peak.

How lucky we are that Alcaraz is pushing his rival all the way! How many more classic contests will we be able to cherish between these two young superstars?

Jannik Sinner’s achievements this year leave everything perfectly poised for Centre Court and Wimbledon 2025.

Alcaraz is of course top dog on the London lawns these days. He has been Wimbledon champion for the last two years.

But Sinner is on the charge – and that progress is great for world tennis. It’s great for Wimbledon too!

Jannik Sinner must believe deep down that he can cement his world number one status with a first title at Wimbledon 2025.

Alcaraz knows his arch rival will be the one to fear at the All England Club. And everything we are seeing towards the end of this wonderful 2024 points to some classic matches in England next summer.

Will you be at Wimbledon 2025 to see the two best players in the world do battle? Can Djokovic summon one last great Grand Slam performance to pull off an historic, unlikely victory?

Whatever happens, we can guarantee drama and glamour at the spiritual home of tennis, where royalty and movie stars rub shoulders with familiar ease.
