Jack Draper Is Proudly Following in Andy Murray’s Footsteps
Japan
September 27, 2024
Jack Draper has caused another tennis upset by defeating Hubert Hurkacz to reach the Japan Open quarter-finals.
And Katie Boulter could be up against Coco Gauff over in China, after the exciting Brit saw off the tricky American Taylor Townsend with some superb serving.
But it’s the dashing Draper who is making the most waves in world tennis right now.
The young Englishman’s latest victory is his third against a top-ten opponent in 2024. Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised any more.
Jack Draper is the real deal. He is sure to be a strong contender at his home Grand Slam next summer. The atmosphere at Wimbledon 2025 will be phenomenal!
It only took two breaks for Draper to cruise past the talented Hurkacz for the first time – an accomplished and impressive 6-4, 6-4 win.
Boulter triumphed by the same score in China as she continues to go from strength to strength.
Jack plays flamboyant Frenchman Ugo Humbert for a place in the last four in Tokyo.
And that prospect won’t phase the 22-year-old. Not after he reached the semi-finals of the US Open a few weeks ago.
He doesn’t even seem nervous about stepping into the mighty shoes of his friend and mentor Sir Andy Murray. A new British tennis star has been born.
Draper explained: ‘I see it as a responsibility to be the person who’s performing. Andy had a lot of success over a long period of time.
‘My biggest respect for him was that he did that with a lot of pressure on his shoulders – especially around Wimbledon time.’
Jack Draper wants to embrace similar pressure to win big at Wimbledon 2025. He certainly isn’t scared of the challenge ahead.
Jack added: ‘I see it as a responsibility to achieve great things for myself and for British tennis.’
As long as he genuinely enjoys that responsibility, Jack Draper will feel further inspired with every passing year. It’s been a great 2024 for the new kid on the block. Next year could be even better.
