Jessica Pegula Reaches US Open Final with Stunning Comeback

US Open

September 6, 2024

Jessica Pegula is a Grand Slam finalist at last after the most spectacular comeback at Flushing Meadows.

The increasingly resilient 30-year-old may have seen oblivion in the scoreboard at 1-6, 0-2 and a break point down at 30-40.

In fact she revealed later she felt on the point of bursting into tears. That’s how comprehensively she was being outgunned.

But incredibly Pegula stormed back to book her place in the final with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory to send the vast crowd wild.

Jessica explained: ‘I don’t know how I turned that around. Honestly! I came out flat but she was playing unbelievable. She made me look like a beginner. I was about to burst into tears because it was embarrassing. She was destroying me.’

Pegula can’t afford to come out flat in the final against the fearsome Aryna Sabalenka. She might not get a second chance to express herself. But all that is for Saturday.

The American dream is still alive! The last time they had a women’s and men’s champion at the US Open was way back in 2002. That’s when the legendary Pete Sampras and Serena Williams held sway.

Either Taylor Fritz of Frances Tiafoe is sure to make it to Sunday’s showpiece for the men. Anything is still possible at this exciting 2024 US Open!

Jessica Pegula is spearheading the American resurgence. And that should also create some truly dramatic moments at Wimbledon 2025!

For now, the home-grown players are giving fans plenty to cheer about at Flushing Meadows. And that was true of the first women’s semi-final too.

Emma Navarro had finally got the crowd going on Ashe with a fightback of her own. She didn’t quite manage to pull off a victory that would have made it an all-American women’s final, though.

It did look as though Emma was turning the tide against the mighty Sabalenka towards the end of the second set.

‘I wasn’t ready for the match to be over,’ Emma admitted later. ‘I kind of got my teeth into it there at the end of the second set. I felt I could definitely push into a third. I wasn’t able to do so.’

Sabalenka won through by summoning extra focus for the breaker to close out 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

Pegula against Sabalenka will provide an awesome spectacle on Saturday. Sabalenka won their recent showdown in Cincinnati. Can Pegula exact some shock revenge?

Jessica Pegula and so many other Americans are now capable of reaching the final at Wimbledon 2025 too.
