Jessica Pegula Downs Iga Swiatek and Draper Is Through Too!
US Open
September 5, 2024
Jessica Pegula has reached a Grand Slam semi-final for the first time at the age of 30.
She beat world number one Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-4 with an extraordinary display of courage and composure in front of a vast home crowd in New York.
The form of American players at the US Open continues to be inspirational. Pegula, Emma Navarro, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe are all still in the hunt for their first major.
Jessica Pegula and the others are leading a renaissance in big-time US tennis. And that could be maintained all the way to Wimbledon 2025!
The Brits will have their own super-hero at Wimbledon next year too. Jack Draper reached his first major semi when he downed tenth seed Alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.
The 22-year-old faces what some might regard as mission impossible next. Draper’s adversary in the last four is tournament favourite Jannik Sinner. He took out Daniil Medvedev in four swift sets.
At least Draper will enter the massive gladiatorial arena that is Arthur Ashe without any pressure at all. He can hit freely and hope to unsettle Sinner from the start.
And young Draper will come into that contest still feeling fresh. He hasn’t lost a set so far at Flushing Meadows – even though the second against De Minaur was gruelling.
Jack explained: ‘I feel the best fitness-wise I’ve been in a long, long time. This means the world.’
Pegula might feel a higher weight of expectation when she faces Karolina Muchova for a place in her home Grand Slam final.
But for now she is just thrilled to have broken her poor run at major quarter-finals. She had lost all six showdowns at this stage previously.
Pegula explained: ‘I’ve been to quarters so many times. I just kept losing – but to great players. The girls went on to win the tournaments.
‘Everyone kept asking me about it. I didn’t know what else to do. Just get there again. Thank God I was able to do it. Finally! Finally I can say I’m a semi-finalist!’
Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper will feel they can go all the way at Wimbledon 2025 too!
