AUSSIE DOMINATION
There was a time when you almost had to be Australian to win Wimbledon. And Aussies are still a huge part of the All England Club story.
Between 1956 and 1971, Australians won the men’s title 13 times in 16 years. Lew Hoad, Ashley Cooper, “Rocket” Rod Laver, Roy Emerson and John Newcombe were the heroes of that era.
The dignified Laver – four times a winner in the 1960s – has been a regular and much-valued visitor to Wimbledon several times this century too.
Margaret Court won the title three times between 1963 and 1970. Evonne Goolagong beat her to capture all our hearts the following year. And Ash Barty’s 2021 Wimbledon triumph – coming on the 50th anniversary of that Goolagong glory – couldn’t have been more timely.
AUSSIE REBELS
Meanwhile Pat Cash changed the face and tradition of Wimbledon by doing something extraordinary in 1987. On winning the men’s singles title, Aussie rebel Cash chose a rock-star celebration and clambered over the roof of the commentators’ box. From there he climbed up into the stands to reach his nearest and dearest and share his precious moment with them. Everyone watched amazed.
Now that journey up to join the team has become the normal routine for players – and the All England Club has made it easier for winners to achieve that emotional reunion.
Australians always bring something different – and there is often a hint of rebellion in the air. Lleyton Hewitt, the 2002 champion, brought with him the Aussie Fanatics, their fun-filled chanting a counter-balance to English formality.
And Nick Kyrgios was perhaps the ultimate Aussie anti-hero, as he thrilled crowds all the way to the 2022 Wimbledon final with his irreverent attitude to practically everything.
HIJIKATA
The latest Australian hope, Alex de Minaur couldn’t be more different. But Brits adore this obvious Mr Nice Guy for his well-documented love story with their own top tennis star. Katie Boulter. Alex hasn’t come quite so close to winning Wimbledon as Kyrgios – yet.
But Aussie doubles star Rinky Hijikata couldn’t have come much closer to glory in 2025, when he and partner David Pel only lost out in the Wimbledon final to all-British pair Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool.
No doubt more Australian success at Wimbledon is just around the corner. History demands it! Come and enjoy Wimbledon 2026 to see how the story unfolds
