Novak Djokovic Seeks Revenge Over Alcaraz in Wimbledon Final
Wimbledon
July 12, 2024
Novak Djokovic stands one match away from making unanswerable history at Wimbledon 2024.
That elusive 25th Grand Slam is within his grasp. The one that would take him clear of Margaret Court. The chance to end all arguments about who is the stand-alone best in tennis history.
Most would say Djokovic has laid claim to that crown already. But while he remains alongside the Australian legend with a joint record of 24 majors, Novak knows that Margaret will often be mentioned in the same breath.
There’s only one way for the Serb to end that association – and that is to draw clear of his rival and finish the debate once and for all.
Novak Djokovic intends to become the undisputed greatest of all time on the most historic court of them all – Centre Court at Wimbledon 2024 on Sunday.
Djokovic used humour in his preview of the match. But there seemed to be plenty of self-belief behind his words. He said of Alcaraz: ‘He’s going to win a lot more Grand Slams. But not this one on Sunday. Maybe when I retire in fifteen years. I’m joking!
‘In all seriousness he is as complete a player as they come. And it will take all my abilities to beat him on Sunday.’
The question is this: will all Novak’s abilities as a 37-year-old be enough to beat the 21-year-olf Carlitos? This showdown could easily go to five sets.
Novak is fresh, though. He benefited from a walkover at the quarter-final stage. And then he won his semi-final in straight sets against Lorenzo Musetti.
Carlos Alcaraz lost a first-set tie-break to Daniil Medvedev earlier on Friday. But then he too was dominant – and avoided an energy-sapping five-setter.
This final is tough to call. It might seem easy to point to another Alcaraz victory – especially if the match turns into a marathon. But this is Novak Djokovic on the other side of the net.
Stunned by Alcaraz last year, he will be ready this time. The court-craft is there, the motivation is immense. If his body doesn’t let him down, Novak could win this against all odds.
Carlos is also confident, though. He talked casually of a ‘cool’ day on Sunday for the Spanish. Although he tried to deny it, the clear suggestion was that both he and the Spain football team will both emerge victorious.
Novak Djokovic has other ideas as he prepares for this thrilling climax to Wimbledon 2024.
We shall see. This is going to be one of the great sporting occasions – of this year and any year.
