Iga Swiatek Wins Roland Garros. Now for Wimbledon 2024?
Roland Garros
June 8, 2024
Iga Swiatek was at her ferocious best to fend off the audacious early challenge of Jasmine Paolini.
And once she had tamed the underdog and put doubts in her mind, it was one-way traffic and a very public demonstration of utter ruthlessness as Swiatek slashed her way to a 6-2, 6-1 thrashing.
That was the stunning end result of perfect sporting harmony between mind and body.
Familiar glory on clay – and a fourth Roland Garros crown to add to her growing trophy collection.
But can Iga Swiatek now go on to take her first women’s singles title at Wimbledon 2024?
That’s what everyone is asking now. And we will find out in a few short weeks.
No one could say the intense Pole didn’t deserve her latest triumph after saving match points against Naomi Osaka in that incredible early showdown.
But the courageous Italian wasn’t nervous in the opening exchanges in Paris.
She actually managed to lead the first set 2-1 after meeting fire with fire to break the world number one.
Crucially she allowed herself to be broken straight back. And her double fault in the sixth game proved fatal.
With her blood up, Swiatek produced a series of withering winners. Over the net, Paolini couldn’t recapture her initial level.
She was simply blasted off court before she could properly regroup.
It looked as though Swiatek simply couldn’t miss as she rained down unanswerable power from every angle.
Paolini will rue some of her unforced errors. But it’s hard to blame her for what happened when Swiatek’s level was from another planet.
Wimbledon 2024 will tell us whether Iga can finally translate her brilliance to a grassy surface.
