Carlos Alcaraz will play Alexander Zverev in Roland Garros Final

Roland Garros

June 7, 2024

Carlos Alcaraz says doesn’t mind suffering. And he might have to suffer some more in the Roland Garros final.

There he will play the controversial Alexander Zverev. And Sascha’s problems off court don’t seem to be bothering him one bit.

Ordinarily it might be more straightforward to predict that Alcaraz will be crowned Roland Garros champion.

And then Carlos Alcaraz could roll onto Wimbledon 2024 – where he is already reigning king of the grass courts.

But Zverev is developing an interesting habit of winning matches when it looks as though he might lose them.

it has happened several times in this tournament. And he was a set down again to Casper Ruud. Then he stormed back to win 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

It’s true that Ruud had stomach problems during the middle part of the match.

But he appeared to have recovered before Zverev took him apart again in the fourth set.

And Sascha’s head-to-head record against Alvaraz lies at 5-4 in the German’s favour.

Carlitos was the most recent winner in their showdown at Indian Wells. But Sascha beat him in the Australian Open this year.

Fans of the Spaniard will point to his US Open win over the more experienced man.

In reality there is very little to choose between these two stars right now.

That’s partly because the edge you might give to Carlos Alcaraz on current form will be slightly dulled by the more gruelling nature of his semi-final.

Carlos had to battle world number one Jannik Sinner for four hours and ten minutes before he triumphed 2-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

And we would dearly love to see a similar showdown between these great young rivals at Wimbledon 2024.

Alcaraz won’t shy away from another classic – just as he won’t be scared of Zverev.

‘You have to find joy in suffering,’ he explained. ‘That’s the key. Even more here on clay at Roland Garros.

‘Long rallies. Four-hour matches. Five sets. You have to fight. You have to suffer. I tell me team that you have to enjoy suffering.’

Zverev also embraces the joy and pain of Phillipe Chatrier. He explained: ‘I’ve got so much history on this court. It’s where I have had some of my best and worst moments.

‘I’m in the final and I’m going to give it my all on Sunday.’

Then the focus will turn to Wimbledon 2024. Make sure you’re there to enjoy the most prestigious tournament of them all.
