Sascha Zverev and Iga Swiatek are Imperious in Rome

Sascha Zverev is now one of the favourites for Roland Garros glory after a dominant performance at the Italian Open in Rome.

Wimbledon 2024 will tell us whether Zverev can now finally bring his best game to the grass and go deep at the All England Club in July.

There was no stopping the powerful German as he claimed his first Masters 1000 title since 2021 – and his sixth in all – with a convincing 6-4, 7-5 victory over Nicolas Jarry.

With his injury problems seemingly firmly behind him and that phenomenal serve firing in frightening fashion, there is no doubt that Zverev will be tough to beat in Paris.

No wonder Sascha sank to his knees on the Roman clay in what has become the happiest of hunting grounds.

He explained: ‘Obviously winning my first ever Masters here in Rome and winning my first after injury here too, this makes Rome a very special place for me. It has been a very, very special week.’

Sascha Zverev is now tipped to take the French Open if Carlos Alcaraz doesn’t turn up fully fit for the rigours of Roland Garros. But Novak Djokovic – who has won nothing all year – may still have a say when it comes to the Grand Slam stage.

Sascha Zverev and Carlos Alcaraz going toe-to-toe on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2024 could provide an awesome spectacle.

And we can’t wait to see whether Iga Swiatek’s imperious form on clay will give her the rhythm she needs to show her very best at Wimbledon 2024 too.

Some will say it’s a good thing the All England Club surface provides a leveller – because the impressive Pole is so much better than the rest right now.

Aryna Sabalenka put up a magnificent fight in Madrid. But clinical Swiatek won in slightly less dramatic style against the same opponent in the Italian capital.

After beating Aryna 6-2, 6-3 to win her 21st career title, Iga admitted: ‘I was playing solid and used my chances. For sure this match looked a little different to Madrid.’

Sascha Zverev and Iga Swiatek will arrive at Wimbledon 2024 as top contenders if they continue like this.
