Carlos Alcaraz shook off his nerves to reign supreme – and Iga Swiatek was even more emphatic.
The young singles champions of Indian Wells did it in style. They also reminded us how this beautiful game of tennis is constantly being taken to new levels.
Both know what it’s like to taste glory at Wimbledon, where Carlitos is reigning men’s singles champion.
But for Swiatek, a Junior Wimbledon title is as much as she has been able to muster so far in an otherwise glittering career. Is Wimbledon 2024 the year she finally makes a big impression among the women on grass?

Surely it’s only a matter of time before that huge Polish following sweeps Swiatek to a first senior triumph at the All England Club? Will you be there to cheer her on?
For Carlos, the key is always enjoyment. Once he relaxes into a rhythm, it seems no one can live with his speed and versatility.
That dominance took a while against Daniil Medvedev, who took the first three games of a superb final. But Alcaraz looked so much happier from that point on, you sensed there was only going to be one winner.
Carlos explained: ‘I was having some nerves at the start and I was not feeling the ball well, so it was tough for me.
‘In three games you can turn it around and I started to play better. I started to calm myself, control my emotions and I found a way to win.’
His 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory presented further evidence of the new, problem-solving Alcaraz who prides himself on mental strength.
Iga Swiatek is another who values the psychological aspect of tennis as highly as anyone. The only issue in her final against Maria Sakkari of Greece was that there was no great problem to solve.
It was the favourite who raced to a 3-0 lead. And although Sakkari hit back, Swiatek stayed firm to take the first set when it mattered.
The second set was one-way traffic. Before we knew it, Iga had closed out 6-4, 6-0 in 69 minutes.
‘I’m sorry I couldn’t put up a better fight,’ Sakkari told the crowd afterwards. ‘It was pretty quick for you guys but credit to Iga.’
It isn’t Swiatek’s fault she’s so good. But can she turn that talent into a trophy at the biggest tournament of them all?
Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek will surely provide two of the most fascinating stories at Wimbledon 2024.
