Emma Raducanu and Coco Gauff Back In Action at Indian Wells
Indian Wells
March 11, 2024
Emma Raducanu faces one of the biggest tests in tennis later today.
She takes on world number two Aryna Sabalenka at Indian Wells.
No one expects former US Open champion Raducanu to win that particular contest at this stage of her overall rehabilitation.
But how she plays in this pressure-free showdown will indicate how much progress she has made of late.
It has already been a good tournament for Emma. Just to reach round three is an achievement, given some of her struggles for form and fitness last year.
Emma Raducanu is gradually finding her feet again – and she should be a force to admire at Wimbledon 2024.
She was playing well when her Ukrainian opponent Dayana Yastremska had to retire through illness in the first set of her previous match.
Big-hearted Emma was winning 4-0 and said later: ‘I was just trying to focus on my side of the court as much as possible and I did that well from the start.
‘I played pretty clean for four games and I just feel bad for Dayana because illness or injury completely sucks – I’ve been there.’
Raducanu will need another storming start to make an impression on power-house Sabalenka next time out. But whatever happens, she is back in the big time – and she should learn from the occasion.
Coco Gauff is another huge star just months from accepting fresh adulation on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2024.
And Coco showed typical fighting spirit to stay in the tournament at Indian Wells in an epic second-round contest against Clara Burel.
Gauff was 0-4 and 2-5 down in the deciding set before she found a way to hang in there for the key breaker.
Eventually Coco triumphed 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to join Raducanu in round three.
Now the American superstar will face Lucia Bronzetti for a place in the last sixteen. And she’ll be hoping not to cut it so fine next time around.
Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu will be huge attractions at Wimbledon 2024.
