Jannik Sinner Wins Australian Open with Dramatic Comeback
Australian Open
January 28, 2024
Jannik Sinner is the comeback king and proud owner of his first Grand Slam title.
He lay flat on his back after a typically explosive forehand down the line sealed glory.
What a monumental feat it had been to turn this five-set thriller around.
Jannik Sinner may win his second major at Wimbledon 2024 if he maintains this extraordinary momentum.
For the first two sets, Daniil Medvedev was at his swashbuckling, free-flowing best. And when he strikes that rich vein of form and uses all his natural ability, the eccentric 27-year-old looks very hard to beat.
No one could quite believe how the match seemed to be going. Medvedev was supposed to be exhausted. He went into the final with an energy-sapping 20 hours and 33 minutes already on court. Sinner had only needed to last 14 hours and 44 minutes up to this point
Those stats caught up with the Russian in the end, though.
Jannik Sinner showed such determination that he will start Wimbledon 2024 with no obvious weaknesses in his game.
No wonder his brain looked scrambled early on, though. Jannik had only been broken twice all fortnight before the final. Suddenly he was broken four times in the first two sets.
What gave Medvedev the confidence to display such early audacity? This was his sixth Grand Slam final. And although he only had the 2021 US Open title to show for all his efforts, he was used to the big occasion.
Sinner can come across as cold and calculating. But he suffers from nerves just like anyone else. It took him a while to settle. But when he did, the results were devastating.
The third set was immediately closer – and increased the dramatic tension. Finally Sinner found his feet and brought the house down when he began to mount the fight-back.
Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev will be at the centre of some high drama at Wimbledon 2024 too. You can sense it already,
In Melbourne, Sinner turned the tide with an almighty, relentless effort. His accuracy was phenomenal.
Both men played their hearts out. Only Grand Slams can produce a 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 rollercoaster like this.
