Jannik Sinner Plays Daniil Medvedev In Australian Open Final
Australian Open
January 26, 2024
Jannik Sinner stands one step from glory after ending the 33-match unbeaten run of Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open.
The Italian was simply sensational against the legendary Serb – and now he must start the final as favourite.
But we can’t rule out Daniil Medvedev after the stamina he has shown Down Under.
The way he came back against Sascha Zverev was every bit as extraordinary as Sinner’s dismissal of Djokovic.
Medvedev just doesn’t seem to know when he is beaten. He revealed his mind set at two sets down. ‘In the third set I told myself “OK let’s go more aggressive.” It started working.’
Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev could go great guns at Wimbledon 2024 on this showing.
Sinner’s new generation is taking over – unless of course Novak can find his feet on the familiar Centre Court grass and win that elusive 25th Grand Slam.
That would take Djokovic clear of Margaret Court as the player with the most majors in tennis history.
How very fitting it would be if Novak could make that history on Centre Court at the All England Club.
But for now Djokovic has been forced to give way to the young pretender. And Jannik Sinner could even have done the job in straight sets, had he not squandered a match point in the third.
The Italian was still in dreamland as he closed out 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.
‘It’s amazing,’ he said afterwards. ‘I served well and kept pushing. I started the fourth set well after missing the match point.’
This is Jannik’s first Grand Slam final. Medvedev has winning experience of a major showpiece in America and this is his third Aussie Open final.
‘I hope it’s third time lucky,’ Medvedev smiled.
Daniil will feel understandably confident after finally turning the tables on Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.
But Sinner is a force to be reckoned with right now – and Medvedev knows he will have to be exceptional on the big day this weekend.
Daniil admitted: ‘He is very impressive and I need to recover well and be one hundred per cent on Sunday.’
