Stefanos Tsitsipas has brought scintillating tennis and a cheeky sense of humour to the Australian Open this year.
The Greek superstar beat local hero Jordan Thompson 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in their quality second-round clash.
Now last year’s finalist looks set to go deep once more in Melbourne, where he always feels at home.
To see his baseline power and subtlety at the net combine so magically, you sense he could be a contender for the Aussie Open title again.
He admitted: ‘The adrenalin and the rush I got out of this match was insane tonight. I got my fair share of support and I’m glad we were able to create an unbelievable atmosphere.’
We want him to enjoy the same sensation when he comes to play on Centre Court at Wimbledon in a few months time.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will go in search of Grand Slam glory at Wimbledon 2024 too!
We’re just waiting for Stef to find some true momentum at the All England Club. Then the mania among his London-based fans could be something to behold.
In the mean time Tsitsipas sparkled as much in his post-match interview with the legendary John McEnroe as he did during the big moments of the match Down Under.
And Stefanos didn’t need much prompting when asked what he could do differently to win his first major after coming so close last year.
Tsitsipas said of Djokovic: ‘Novak is a very selfish person winning ten times here. He needs wake up one morning feeling less selfish.
‘Otherwise one of two things needs to happen. Either someone else beats him or I have to beat him.’
The crowd laughed along with Tsitsipas, knowing that no disrespect was intended.
We can’t wait to see how this Aussie Open unfolds!
There has already been a big shock, with two-time Wimbledon women’s finalist Ons Jabeur being knocked out by sixteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva 6-0, 6-2.
Let’s see what stunning entertainment remains in the days to come.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will probably do even more over the next week to make us all look forward to seeing him at Wimbledon 2024.
And don’t forget that Wimbledon is the most prestigious Grand Slam of them all!
