Marketa Vondrousova won Wimbledon 2023 against all odds, with a display of impeccable versatility on Centre Court.
You would never have known that she was unseeded this year – or badly injured this time last year.
At the age of 24, Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman ever to win Wimbledon, and she played superbly to do so.
We did warn that Vondrousova had produced the finest performance of all four women in the semi-finals.
It’s just that no one expected her to be quite so unflappable in her first final at the spiritual home of tennis. Marketa’s level simply never dipped.
Marketa Vondrousova has produced psychological and technical perfection all fortnight at Wimbledon 2023.
Her brilliance spelt pain for poor Ons Jabeur, who was defeated in the showpiece for the second successive year.
The Princess of Wales did her best to comfort the brave loser, but Ons looked pretty inconsolable.
The Tunisian was in a commanding position at 4-2 in the first set. Then she lost five successive games, and never quite recovered.
There was so much pressure on Jabeur – and it told. She would have been the first African, first Arab and first Muslim to take the title. It wasn’t to be. Perhaps she wanted it too much.
A tearful Jabeur said: “This is very, very tough. It’s the most painful loss of my career. Congratulations to Marketa and her team for an amazing tournament.
‘You’re an amazing player and I know you’ve had a lot of injuries, so I’m very happy for you.
‘It’s going to be a tough day. But I’m not going to give up. I’m going to come back stronger. We’re going to make it one day, I promise you. I’ll come back one day and win this tournament.’
Centre Court will be delighted if that happens. For now, they were ecstatic for the new champion.
Vondrousova said: ‘I don’t really know what’s happening now. It’s an amazing feeling. Congrats to Ons, I hope you’re gonna win one day.
‘After everything I’ve been through – I had a cast on this time last year – it’s amazing to be holding the trophy. Tennis is crazy!
‘I started playing small tournaments and hoped something like this could happen. Stefan my husband is here – and tomorrow is our first anniversary!
‘My coach promised he would have a tattoo if I won – and I think we will go tomorrow. Tonight I might have some beer.’
Marketa Vondrousova is a popular Wimbledon 2023 winner – and she didn’t want to break Jabeur’s heart.
But that’s tennis – and that’s the drama of Wimbledon every year. There’s still time to get a ticket for the men’s final.
What a tournament it has been!
