Petra Kvitova Aims For A Hat-Trick Of Wimbledon Titles
Wimbledon
July 8, 2023
Petra Kvitova might have reason to believe Wimbledon 2023 could be her time.
It has been nine years since the likeable Czech last took the title at the All England Club.
She won our hearts at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014 for her power and grace, as well her humility in victory.
And we were all shocked to hear how her career was threatened by a home invasion in 2016.
Nerves were severed in her left hand as she foight for her life and recovery was slow.
In 2019 she showed how completely her tennis powers had been restored by reaching the Australian Open final.
But perhaps it is only this year that Petra has shown the self-belief to go with her immense talent.
Petra Kvitova is a big contender for Wimbledon 2023 with the women’s tournament wide open.
She won Miami earlier in the year and recently took another title in Berlin on grass.
And the way she took the first set against the noisy Natalija Stevanovic in just 38 minutes on Court Two on Saturday suggests Kvitova means business.
She may not move as well as many of her opponents. But her devastating stroke play is hard for anyone to combat when she is on song.
That’s how it was for the Serb on Saturday at Wimbledon, deeply determined as the underdog was.
And Kvitova’s extraordinary powers of anticipation help her to defend and attack,, as we saw in the key rally that helped her break early in the second set.
The level of tennis was little less than extraordinary at times. Qualifier Stevanovic has to take a lot of credit for that.
But when all was said and done, the more experienced player won through 6-3, 7-5.
Petra Kvitova is still capable of going all the way at Wimbledon 2023.
And whatever happens, she will be a joy to watch fir as long as she lasts.
