Medvedev took the trophy but Murray created the memories.
That’s how you could sum up an extraordinary week in Doha after Andy lost to Daniil in the final.
Murray saw it pretty much the same way after his 4-6, 4-6 reverse.
Andy Murray will create so many more memories at Wimbledon 2023.
We can be confident of that after witnessing his superb fighting spirit during a wonderful week back in the big time.
Five match points saved in the semi-final! Many a dramatic cliff-hanger before that too!
If Murray can hit such heights in Doha, what can he achieve at his home Grand Slam – Wimbledon 2023?
He said: ‘It was an incredible week. Obviously it didn’t finish how I wanted. But I had some amazing matches here and created some great memories.
‘Fantastic to be back in a final here again, against an incredible player. Daniil is one of my favourite players to watch and one of the best players on the Tour.
‘Great for me to get that opportunity to play against someone of his level in a final again and definitely some things to work on.
‘But I’m proud of my week and the work that me and my team have put in to get me back to this stage.’
In the final analysis, you could argue that Murray ran out of steam at the vital moment.
He was 40-0 up at 4-4 in the second set – and could have made Medvedev serve to stay in it.
Instead he lost five points in a row and the contest was as good as over.
But we can forgive Andy that lapse. We can overlook the less reliable forehand and the erratic work at the net. All the dream tennis that we’d seen on the way to the final cannot be erased.
And when Murray screamed “I’m back!” after his semi-final, he meant it.
He really is back in the hunt for the biggest trophies.
And you can bet Andy will be dreaming of many more victories at Wimbledon 2023.
We should acknowledge the excellence of Medvedev, though. He won Rotterdam and now Qatar – back-to-back titles.
Murray likes him – so why shouldn’t we? Tennis is the common denominator.
And we can’t wait for Wimbledon 2023 – just a few months away now.
The history and glamour of the All England Club is simply irresistible.
Will you be there?
