Nick Kyrgios Becomes Unique Citi Slicker With DC Glory

August 8, 2022

Nick Kyrgios has become the first man to win both the singles and doubles at the Citi Open in the same year.

The Wimbledon finalist is in sparkling form in the build-up to the US Open.

Nick Kyrgios could also prove an irresistible force at Wimbledon 2023.

Now he has a final under his belt at the All England Club, he can face anyone on equal terms in a Grand Slam showpiece.

The controversial Australian isn’t just pure entertainment and massive box office these days.

He is starting to become a true winner as well.

And that makes Kyrgios a dangerous prospect for the business end of the US Open next month.

He certainly cleaned up in spectacular style in Washington DC.

It was a rollercoaster as usual. But this time the ride resulted in unprecedented double glory.

Kyrgios saved five match points in an epic quarter-final against Frances Tiafoe and sensed his name was on the singles trophy for the first time since 2019.

The final against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka felt like something of a formality, as Kyrgios breezed to his seventh overall singles title 6-4, 6-3.

The 27-year-old did not drop serve in the entire tournament.

Astonishingly he then went out and teamed up with American hero Jack Sock for the doubles final.

Kyrgios and Sock defeated fourth-seeded Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek 7-5, 6-4 to complete Nick’s remarkable week.

On this form he could soon secure a singles seeding at the US Open because he has already shot up to world number 37.

Kyrgios said: ‘It’s just very emotional for me. To see where I was at last year to now, it’s just an incredible transformation.

‘I just came out with great energy and I knew I had experience on my side today.

‘I’ve been in some really dark places. Just to be able to turn it around and win tournaments like this one.’

Why shouldn’t the increasingly popular Nick Kyrgios win Wimbledon 2023 as well?

We’re looking forward to his title charge on grass already!
