Wimbledon 2022 Top Ten Dramatic Moments
Wimbledon
July 16, 2022
This top ten will get you talking – and you may not concur with our running order because we know those favourite moments are always so subjective.
But we can all agree it was a fantastic Wimbledon 2022 and the Championships had a bit of everything!
You can be sure Wimbledon 2023 will be just as dramatic!
Here goes for Wimbledon 2022 – in reverse order and with a brief explanation. Feel free to disagree!
10/ Ons Jabeur Beats Her Close Friend Tatjana Maria To Reach Final.
Ons Jabeur won a lot of friends at Wimbledon 2022. Not least when she beat her good pal Tatjana Maria in the semi-final and insisted they take the post-match applause together out on Centre Court. Beautiful!
9/ Emma Raducanu Wins On Centre Court.
Emma had struggled for consistency since her US Open triumph – so it was uplifting to see the new world superstar win her opener against Alison Van Uytvanck on Centre Court. A special moment for British fans!
8/ Elena Rybakina Beats Ons Jabeur To Win Wimbledon.
It was something of an upset when Elena Rybakina beat Ons Jabeur to clinch the women’s singles title. An emotional moment for the first-time winner – but this denouement didn’t necessarily go to script.
7/ Cameron Norrie Defeats David Goffin To Reach Wimbledon Semi-Final.
The British hero just couldn’t be matched for sheer desire over five scintillating sets on Court No1. He booked himself a mouth-watering semi-final spot against the great Novak Djokovic and how we cheered!
6/ Serena Williams Edged Out In Thrilling Farewell.
You wonder whether this was Serena’s last match on Centre Court. If so, it was certainly dramatic. Williams seemed to be home and dry in the super-breaker – but then Harmony Tan stormed back in style.
5/ John Isner Triumphant In Andy Murray Classic.
This was hard to beat for sheer drama. Home favourite Andy Murray won the third and could have forced a fifth. But Isner’s tennis came from the gods after the roof was shut – and he closed out under the lights.
4/ Novak Djokovic Tames Nick Kyrgios To Win Wimbledon 2022.
The most masterful and important performance of a tournament isn’t always the most dramatic. After early Kyrgios fireworks, Novak was brilliant – and he stays in touch with Rafael Nadal’s 22 Grand Slams.
3/ Roger Federer’s Surprise Centre Court Appearance On Middle Sunday.
See where our order gets controversial? Most people expected Djokovic to beat Kyrgios. But few expected Roger Federer to stride out onto Centre Court for his Centenary Year standing ovation. Scenes!
2/ Rafael Nadal Outlasts Taylor Fritz In A Quarter-Final Classic.
The American had victory in his grasp and will surely win Wimbledon one day. But Rafael Nadal refused to be beaten – even though he was hurting badly from an abdominal strain. What a hero and what a match!
1/ Nick Kyrgios Downs Stefanos Tsitsipas In The Unmissable Psychological War.
Wimbledon 2022 might just be remembered most for this one – the most bad-tempered match in the tournament’s history. This was box-office tennis and Kyrgios eventually won the mind games.
So that’s it for this year folks. What a fortnight! We gave you an early heads-up on the right court for the most dramatic match of them all – Kyrgios v Tsitsipas. And we predicted Roger Federer’s surprise Centre Court appearance on Middle Sunday too!
