Simona Halep Threatens To Repeat Wimbledon Glory Day
Wimbledon
July 5, 2022
Simona Halep is playing the kind of tennis that saw her win Wimbledon back in 2019.
The likeable Romanian is the only Grand Slam winner still standing in the women’s singles last eight.
And yet she has attracted little attention at the All England Club this year compared to Nick Kyrgios, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and even the injured Roger Federer.
Simona Halep could still make all the headlines on Saturday if she wins Wimbledon 2022!
Remember how she took down the great Serena Williams back in 2019 when she played her ‘perfect match’?
Halep then charmed the Wimbledon crowd by revealing how thrilled she was to become a member at the All England Club as a result of taking the title.
That sort of innocent humility appealed to the British public and they took Simona to their hearts.
Then for reasons beyond her control Halep faded from the London scene.
Wimbledon couldn’t be played in 2020 due to the pandemic and Simona was injured last year.
That never shook Halep’s desire to defend her title one day and she will see these Championships as belatedly affording her that opportunity.
Wimbledon 2022 has allowed Simona Halep to fly under the radar into the final stages.
Most of the early attention was on the dominant Iga Swiatek and the legendary Serena Williams.
But now Halep can be ignored no more.
Look at the emphatic manner of her victory in the last sixteen.
Simona took just an hour to beat the excellent Paula Badosa of Spain 6-1, 6-2.
She knew what a swashbuckling display she had given at the scene of her previous Wimbledon triumph.
‘Definitely Centre Court was a place I wanted to be today,’ Halep said later.
‘I think I played a great match. It is always difficult to play her. But it was a pleasure to be back on Centre Court with this great crowd supporting me.’
Will Simona cope with being favourite at Wimbledon 2022?
If that mantle rests heavily on her shoulders then the American sensation Amanda Anisimova will be waiting to take full advantage in the quarters.
But whatever happens it’s going to be awesome to see how close Halep comes to repeating past glory here.
Will you be joining us to watch Halep and her rivals at the business end of this fascinating tournament ?
