Andy Murray fought back against big-serving Reilly Opelka to reach his first ATP Final since 2019.
Now anything is possible – even the Wimbledon 2022 title!
The Braveheart Scot refused to let the crushing disappointment of a dramatic tie-break reverse deter him.
And at the end of three incredible sets, Murray was quite simply in dreamland.
He said: ‘I love competing. You want to try to finish the matches if you can. But I lost a tight first set and it’s not easy to come back against someone who serves like that. I kept fighting…and managed to get the win.’
It’s not just that Andy managed to lob a man who is 6ft 11 inches tall on his way to glory.
The 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 6-4 victory over Opelka leaves the Brit on the verge of a 47th ATP title.
One of his ambitions is to hit the half-century of title triumphs before he retires.
‘It would be amazing to start the year with a win,’ Murray added. ‘It’s been a great week for me. Great progress against anything I’ve done in the past year. I’ve played better with each match. I’ll go for 47 tomorrow.’

He has already won it twice. Now his body is allowing his sheer brilliance to shine through once more!
That hip resurfacing is really paying dividends. And the injuries that previously held him back have been consigned to history.
The awesome Murray talent has always been undeniable. The fighting spirit is second to none.
And whatever happens in the final at Sydney, we should be celebrating what it means.
Wimbledon 2022 won’t just be about the homecoming of US Open champion Emma Raducanu.
Andy Murray will also take centre stage with a very real chance of taking the title.
This Sydney run is an important step towards that ultimate goal.
We suspected he might be fresh enough to stake a claim Down Under, after he only had to play a set against David Goffin in the quarter-final.
Poor Goffin had to retire after that very one-sided opener – and Murray was suddenly set fair.
That gave Andy the energy he required for a stunning comeback in the semi-final the epic against American Opelka.
Irrepressible Murray felled the powerful giant in ruthless style. He took full control in sets two and three. And crucially Murray broke just when he needed to do so.
The fiery old favourite didn’t falter as he served out the match with a roar.
Since 2017, he has only reached two ATP Finals – Doha and then Antwerp where he won in 2019. So we share Murray’s new ecstasy after all his hardship.
He was due to face either fellow Brit Dan Evans or top seed Aslan Karatsev in the Sydney final.
But the comeback is pretty much complete whatever happens.
Now we can’t wait to see Andy Murray go deep at Wimbledon 2022. He could even win it!
That would be such a fitting outcome in Wimbledon’s centenary year at the current venue.
History, health and happiness will be the watchwords as the All England Club puts on the greatest show of them all in a few months’ time.
