Looking back helps us to look forward. Enjoy some of the most vivid memories from 2021.
They serve to whet the appetite for Wimbledon 2022!
It’s all subjective of course. But these are the ten moments that stayed most in our minds – in reverse order.
10. Serena Williams make a regal entrance on Centre Court.
Serena is the queen of Wimbledon. So when she took centre stage wearing a flowing white train it seemed so appropriate. Injury heartbreak soon followed but we will never forget her bravery and dignity as she waved farewell to the crowd.
9. Sascha Zverev finally beats Daniil Medvedev to win ATP Tour Finals.
Sascha Zverev had lost to Daniil Medvedev five times in a row including once earlier in the same tournament. So Zverev’s victory in Turin was a big moment and suggests the German, who also won the Olympic title, could do well at Wimbledon 2022.
8. Daniil Medvedev beats Novak Djokovic to win US Open.
It was a big moment for tennis when the popular Daniil Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title. Anyone who beats the great Novak Djokovic deserves the honour. The Russian’s victory provided another important step in the changing of the guard.
7. Emma Raducanu reaches the second week of Wimbledon.
Few knew about Emma Raducanu at the start of Wimbledon 2021. But when Emma thrilled the No1 Court crowd to beat Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 7-5 we all saw her raw passion. It meant she had reached the second week of Wimbledon at the age of 18. A star was born – and it was going to get even better later in the year!
6. Novak Djokovic beats Rafael Nadal at the French Open.
This was the victory that helped Novak Djokovic edge towards parity in the race to become the greatest of all time. Rafael Nadal was favourite as usual at Roland Garros. But the superb Serb downed him in an epic semi-final. Djokovic went on to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final to notch his 19th major.
5. Ash Barty triumphs at Wimbledon for the first time.
Ash Barty is loved the world over for her natural, down-to-earth way of dealing with fame. In the summer of 2021 she became a whole lot more famous at Wimbledon. She won a thrilling three-set final against Karolina Pliskova on Centre Court to cement her place as the most in-form woman on the planet.
4. Novak Djokovic wins Wimbledon to reach historic landmark.
When Novak Djokovic overcame the big-serving Matteo Berrettini in a thrilling Wimbledon final, he joined Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer on twenty Grand Slams. And Wimbledon 2022 could provide the stage for Djokovic to become the undisputed greatest of all time in the men’s game.
3. Roger Federer graces Wimbledon and Centre Court for dramatic victory.
Roger Federer was still a beautiful and formidable sight on Centre Court at Wimbledon 2021. Adrian Mannarino tested the great man severely before succumbing to injury. We were treated to three sets of sumptuous play. Federer’s magic was already bewitching the underdog when it ended.
2. Andy Murray inspires Centre Court with epic battling display.
Those of us who thought we might have seen the last of Andy Murray were happily surprised at Wimbledon. He brought the house down on Centre Court with his sheer will to win and familiar brilliance. Oscar Otte pushed Murray all the way in their second-round classic. But Andy won in five with a trademark lob. No one does it better.
1. Emma Raducanu wins the US Open.
Even as we write those words it is still hard to believe. Emma Raducanu couldn’t stop winning at Flushing Meadows and now she is a Grand Slam champion! She upset the odds in such a gloriously joyful and endearing way.
Yes, we Brits have our very own Coco Gauff and Maria Sharapova rolled into one! Emma Raducanu is a global superstar with the world at her feet. We can’t wait to welcome her as Wimbledon 2022 approaches. Go Emma!
There’s our top ten. So many of these moments point to an amazing Wimbledon 2022 just around the corner! Emma Raducanu will try to win the title she dreams about the most – Wimbledon.
Meanwhile Andy Murray is almost back to his very best and aims to go much deeper at Wimbledon 2022. Murray and Raducanu are the dream team and will make Wimbledon 2022 the hottest ticket of the British summer.
But it’s not just about the Brits. Zverev is on the charge and Medvedev is another big contender. But can they take down Novak Djokovic on grass?
Wimbledon 2022 could be the place where Novak ends the argument about who is the greatest of all time. Fresh history in centenary year at the home of tennis!
