Daniil Medvedev and his wonderful athleticism earned a thrilling victory over Sascha Zverev in the best match of the ATP Finals so far.
We can’t wait for similar sporting acrobatics at Wimbledon 2022!
Zverev’s power and precision appeared to be carrying the day in the decisive breaker, when the German led 4-2 and looked so strong.
Back came the more flamboyant Russian with four straight points and flowing stroke-play straight from the tennis gods.
Yet Zverev still wasn’t beaten. He saved the first match point with an ace and the second with a sizzling return.
Medvedev wasn’t thrown off course by this impressive resistance. He deserved his fifth successive win over this prickly and testing opponent.
An amazing improvised backhand smash kept Daniil in the hunt and reminded us which star possesses the more spontaneous brand of magic.
Sascha finally wilted under the constant pressure and that’s a familiar feeling against his rival.
Daniil Medvedev was the dramatic 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (8-6) victor.
It’s now two years since Zverev beat Medvedev, even though they always seem well matched.
Daniil took the first set in Turin after he broke with some extraordinary domination up at the net.
Sascha showed he too could serve and volley at times. He took the first breaker with ease.
The second and final tie-break seemed to be going the same way until Medvedev raised his level.
Once more the mental edge belonged to Zverev’s nemesis. And Sascha will only win his first Grand Slam when he improves his performance in the mind games.
Medvedev has already made that all-important breakthrough with his US Open triumph over Novak Djokovic.
And these year-end finals seem to be pointing towards a showdown between the same two men.
Djokovic isn’t always at his peak for this tournament. Too often he has already achieved his objective – to finish the season as world number one.
The fact that he has done so for the seventh time has led living legend Pete Sampras to claim Novak is now the best in history.
Yet the race for Grand Slam supremacy is still going strong.
Will Medvedev deny Djokovic further Grand Slam glory at Wimbledon 2022?
Daniil hasn’t yet shown his greatest form on grass and we would dearly love to see him go deep at Wimbledon.
He is a popular, quirky character who is never boring to watch.
