Swiatek and Murray Form Unlikely Alliance
Locker Room
June 8, 2021
Iga Swiatek and Sir Andy Murray have shown the charm and humility that make them such popular champions.
And the pair will team up for practice on grass before Wimbledon 2021.
Could Swiatek and Murray even play mixed doubles at Wimbledon?
Now that would bring back delightful memories of Murray and Serena in 2019.
The Wimbledon 2021 crowds would be thrilled to see young sensation Swiatek and superstar Murray team up beyond the practice courts.
And there will be legions of British-based Poles at the All England Club to follow their young heroine.
So the developing friendship between Swiatek and Murray is fast becoming a lovely subplot that will please everyone later this month.
The new rapport was born over twitter in the last few days.
Although French Open champion Swiatek has been storming through the latest Roland Garros tournament, her mind is already on Wimbledon and the grass.
Just as Roger Federer showed that Wimbledon is his priority, so Swiatek was also looking ahead beyond the clay.
Andy started it all off with a comment on twitter and Iga quickly picked up on it.
Watching the French Open on TV, Murray wrote admiringly: ‘Love watching Iga Swiatek.’
Iga replied: ‘Thank you Sir Andy! Are you by any chance up for a practice? I really need to improve my skills on grass.’
‘Any time,’ replied Andy with a smile. ‘Just promise to go easy on me as I’m a bit old and fragile now!’
Of course in reality Murray is no more fragile than Iga is lacking skills on grass.
Swiatek is a former Junior Wimbledon Singles champion. Murray has won Wimbledon twice.
And if all goes well he still fancies his chances of pulling off an upset to make it a Wimbledon hat-trick.
But it is well known that he has had to time everything perfectly for Wimbledon due to long-term hip problems.
He should be ready to play his best tennis once more – a final assault on the summit at the home of our sport.
Meanwhile Swiatek admitted that she still doesn’t feel entirely comfortable on grass – even though she has won the biggest girls’ grass court tournament in the world!
So the loveable Pole will pick Murray’s brains and gain some confidence ahead of Wimbledon.
And make no mistake, she has the game and the class to win the women’s title if she gets on a roll.
She already has the skills she talks about. She just needs to believe in them.
Murray will help with all that. He is a superb coach-in-the-making anyway.
So this is a magnificent emerging alliance. The British fans are sure to take Iga to their hearts. And Murray is of course still Britain’s favourite sportsman.
Imagine the cheers for Swiatek and Murray at Wimbledon 2021!
