Novak Djokovic started in the morning and finished in the evening with a second remarkable win secured.
His reward is a 57th contest with his biggest rival, Rafael Nadal.
If Djokovic can hold his own in the Rome final, his stamina really can be regarded as incredible.
We can’t wait to welcome our superhuman champion to Wimbledon 2021!
There really is no one quite like Novak Djokovic. We’ll miss him when he has gone.
The world number one spent four hours and fifty-five minutes on court on Saturday.
First the redoubtable Serb came back from a set down against Stefanos Tsitsipas in a fantastic match rated by many as the best of the year so far.
Then he went to three sets against home favourite Lorenzo Sonego before edging it 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2.
Djokovic said of that second clash of the day: ‘I think I bounced back very well after the second set. I only have myself to blame for not closing the match in straight sets.
‘I could have and should have done it. There was an electric atmosphere and in the end I closed out well.’
Now he faces the King of Clay but insists he won’t be running on empty.
Novak added: ‘First I need to recover and hopefully I’ll have fresh legs because that’s what you definitely need against Rafa. Tomorrow I’ll hope to be fresh and I’ll give it my all.’
Campo Centrale at the Foro Italico had never seen anything like this unforgettable Saturday.
The big Italian crowd were well aware of what they were witnessing and cheered all day and all night.
