Serena Williams Plots Her Comeback Trail
Locker Room
July 17, 2020
Serena Williams will return to action at a new American hardcourt tournament on August 10.
The Top Seed Open takes place in Lexington, Kentucky. It’s one of two new events added to the WTA calendar, the other being in Prague.
Kentucky will be the perfect first warm-up event for Serena as she feels her way back onto the WTA tour.
Palermo kicks the tour off on August 3. But it makes more sense for Serena to stay home and wait a week.
She will want to prepare carefully without the added distraction of international travel. Things will soon be getting pretty intense in the USA alone.
The Cincinnati Masters moves to Flushing Meadows in mid-August, before the same famous venue hosts their big one.
The US Open takes place between August 31 and September 13. There won’t be any raucous crowds. But there will still be a degree of pressure for the American superstar.
She remains just one major short of Margaret Court’s 24, though the Australian played in much gentler athletic times.
By the time Serena steps out for the US Open, she should be ready to take another shot at drawing level with Court.
We’re already looking forward to seeing Serena at Wimbledon 2021 – the greatest Grand Slam of them all.
Who knows, Wimbledon might just be the place she actually passes Court’s tally and makes tennis history.
It would be so fitting for Serena to become the undisputed tennis queen on the historic grassy lawns where she has enjoyed so much success.
The crowds at Wimbledon 2021 would just love that. It won’t be all that long before we can see if that dream comes true.
Yes, the calendar countdown has now begun for Wimbledon 2021. It feels great!
For Serena right now, it’s one step at a time.
And after such a long lay-off, the sight of the world’s greatest ever player, strutting her stuff and turning on the power in sporting combat, will be more than enough to be going on with.
No one will expect too much of Serena at first. She hasn’t played competitive tennis since playing for the USA against Latvia in the Fed Cup back in February.
As we all know, the tour was suspended in March due to the pandemic and only now makes its long-awaited comeback.
Spectators will return soon enough. Tickets are already on sale for the French Open, starting on September 20.
After a false start or two, it seems that tennis will finally get back to normal in the coming months.
And that surely means spectators will be welcomed back safely in plenty of time for the glorious fun of Wimbledon 2021.
We couldn’t be happier with that prospect. Serena is back. Wimbledon will be back before we know it too!
