Roger Federer has set his sights on hitting his highest level in time for Wimbledon 2021.
That’s great news for tennis fans still desperate to see the living legend put on one last spectacular show at the spiritual home of tennis.
But here’s the thing. Roger isn’t just talking like a man who wants to play at Wimbledon 2021.
The incredible Federer sounds like he still has serious ambitions to win Wimbledon 2021.
And why not? As we have all realised in recent years, you write him off at your peril.
Federer will do everything necessary to shine again at Wimbledon. In fact he has already started that process.
The first thing he needs is a period of rest and recovery.
The world’s favourite player has just announced a six-month break from tennis to get his knee absolutely ready.
And we all know what happened last time he did that! Federer went on an extraordinary run and took three of the next five Grand Slam titles.
The Swiss master seems keen to evoke memories of that magical time in his latest statement.
And Roger has made it clear the good times are far from over.
He wrote:
‘Dear Fans,
‘I hope you’re staying safe and healthy. A few weeks ago, having experienced a setback during my initial rehabilitation, I had to have an additional quick arthroscopic procedure on my right knee.
‘Now, much like I did leading up to the 2017 season, I plan to take the necessary time to be 100% ready to play at my highest level.
‘I will be missing my fans and the tour clearly, but I will look forward to seeing everyone back on tour at the start of the 2021 season.
All the best,
Roger.’
When Federer came back in 2017 he immediately won the Australian Open and went on to win Wimbledon again that same year.
The much-loved superstar delighted us all yet again by taking the next Australian Open too.
Last summer the evergreen Federer came within one point of taking yet another Wimbledon title.
He still wants to add to his twenty Grand Slams. Roger reached the Australian Open semi-final earlier this year and hasn’t played since.
That is likely to work in his favour in a tennis year largely written off by covid19 anyway.
By January, the greatest of them all will be back on the road.
But make no mistake. Roger Federer has no intention of making token appearances on tour in 2021.
If it turns out to be his last year, then he intends to go out with a bang. He still wants to win as much as he can.
That’s why Federer’s latest announcement is fantastic news for Wimbledon 2021.
Next year he will be fully refreshed. Revitalised. Hungry to show he can still do it.
Roger will start the year in Australia – scene of so much recent success.
Then he will have a tough decision to make about Roland Garros.
Whatever he decides, he will make sure he is in peak condition for Wimbledon 2021.
Then he will take a tilt at an Olympic gold medal in Tokyo.
If Federer still feels in good enough shape by the time the US Open comes round, that could prove to be his farewell Slam.
But Wimbledon and the Olympics will be his biggest priorities.
And Wimbledon 2021 will surely provide the stage for the most powerfully emotional Federer farewell of them all.
Roger is clearly already planning for it.
Who would want to miss that poignant moment in sporting history?
