Highest Year End Ranking Since 2010
A huge positive for me at the end of this year is finishing the year ranked World No.4 in Doubles. This is my highest year-end doubles World Ranking since 2010 and my highest World Ranking since 2013 when I reached a doubles career-high of World No.3. Reaching the year-end Doubles Masters final alongside 5 other International titles this year with 3 different partners has definitely shown good consistency on the doubles court. 2019 also brought about a career milestone for me as I achieved 100 career ITF titles and now have 31 career singles and 73 career doubles titles to my name.
My Team
Alongside these achievements this year, I have also enjoyed setting up a new team around me. In January I started working with Debbie Hale at West Hants Club in Bournemouth. Debbie has really challenged me on the court throughout the year. Breaking down my game and in some ways reinventing aspects of my tennis. It’s not been an easy year and the biggest challenge has definitely been accepting that sometimes you have to take a step backwards to move forward.
While the summer months were littered with sporadic performances. I tried to put new aspects of my game into practice, I continued to take huge steps forwards hitting personal bests across all fitness tests. During this time, Debbie also introduced Ben Collingwood into the training team. A Bournemouth University student, Ben has been a great addition both on and off the court. It has been a nice feeling having the combined efforts and energy from both Debbie and Ben to help see me through this difficult phase. Always knowing that during the tough times I have a team behind me that are making decisions and working to help make me a better player.
Semana Guga tournament in Brazil
A turning point in my year came in October when Ben and I travelled out to compete at the Semana Guga tournament in Brazil. In the Semi-Final I produced one of my best performances of the year, beating a player I had lost to earlier in the year, and convincingly too, 6-0, 6-3. This is hugely positive going into a Paralympic Year in what will be my fourth consecutive Paralympic Games.
Thank you
Being able to travel with a coach to tournaments comes at a huge financial cost. It is only thanks to donations from my supporters that I am able to invest in this and continue to make improvements. I cannot thank you enough for your support and involvement in 2019 which has seen me able to purchase a new tennis wheelchair and travel with my coaches to 7 tournaments this year.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and best wishes,
Lucy x
